We are learning about weight and capacity

Weight and Capacity

I filled a box with 16 of the tissue boxes on the table so they fit snuggly.  What could the measurements of the large box be?

At the supermarket Mum brought exactly 12 L of drink.  She bought some soft drink and some fruit juice. Some were in boxes of cans, some were bottles etc.  What drinks collection could she have bought?

Sizes are - cans 355 ml s, small bottles of juice 300mls, small bottles of fizz are 330mls, big bottles 2L, middle size 1 and 1/2L, big big bottles of juice 3L and the medium size is 1L.

  1. 21 cans-7L, 1 Big big bottle of juice 3L=10L, 1 Big bottle 2L=12L.
  2. 33 cans-11L, Medium juice bottle 1L=12L
  3. 3 big big bottle of juice- 3,  3L=9L, 3 medium juice- 1L=3L=12L

If a dog's weight is rounded to 18kg - what are some of the possibilities that his weight could be?

Calendar Art

This is my sea turtle that I did for my calendar art. I got to chose from six different option. I went for the sea turtle. There were a lot of steps first we had to draw the turtle, then we had to go over the turtle with white pastel, then we had to go over the turtle with three different sorts of colours in each bit of the shell, and then colour the flippers and the head a different colour, after that dye the background blue so it look like it is swimming in the sea.

I am blogging this because I am very proud of it.
We are learning to make the sea turtle look effective.

Art Exhibition Piece

We are learning to not rush the art and take your time with it. If you rush your art is not going to be the best your ever done.
I am blogging this because I want my parent’s to see my artwork.

Process of Art
First draw the owl.
After that draw the branch.
After that start painting the owl.
Then paint the branch.
Then do the feet.
After that do the back ground.
Last you have to do the swirls.

I found going around the feet hard because I am going over the feet.

we are learning about a famous artist

I am blogging this because I am proud of it

Flag Designer: Dick Frizzell

I've been struggling with this off and on for years...gobbling up huge hours in the studio...and it always comes back to that fern ... and/or that Southern Cross. I'm not particularly bothered that the cross is not unique to us, it can always be re-interpreted ... and it's so FLAGGISH ... some traditions are hard to beat and 'stars on flags' is one of them. But it's the fern that does set us apart.

I'm working on a design - which I'm pretty hot on - that incorporates both the Cross and the Fern. I'm finding a powerful echo here of the existing flag, with the branching fern fronds similar in their fanning effect to the radiating bars of Union Jack ... and dominating the upper left of the flag. And the Cross is more or less in the same position ... but against black ... which makes sense given that they're seen at night.

The corner to corner arrangement is also an existing flag design tradition. The fern and the star look pretty good ALL in black, but I'm keen to introduce that Pohutakawa green ... to strike a note for our green image. There's a pictorial thing going on here too ... which can be a bit scary in a flag ... but is a nice narrative here ... we are looking at the night sky from underneath a silver fern ... a nice bit of South Pacific romanticism ... like an old Rudall Hayward movie.

Don't think I've quite nailed the actual 'fern-ish-ness' of the fern yet but I'm pretty happy with it.
But all the talking-up and clever rationales aren't going to matter in the end ... if it doesn't just reach out and say THIS IS THE NEW NEW ZEALAND FLAG then it doesn’t work.

Dick Frizzell

Questions (WALT locate and summarise information):

What are the main features of the flag and what do they represent?  southern cross  is on the black because the cross is found in the night sky and the fern because of the fanning effect

What do you think of his design?  it is very detailed

What two main features would you want to include in a NZ flag design? Explain why. Fern & kiwi because they are both rare and they are only are found in New Zealand.

week 6 term 3 - Art Plan

I am blogging this because  I think my parents want to see what I'm doing for art this term
we are learning to challenge our selves in our art choices

art Plan
Later in the term, the whole school is taking part in a visual arts exhibition. You will have to make your own piece of visual art.

Success Criteria of the art
  • No larger than A3
  • Must be super high quality (your absolute personal best)
  • Must be a type of visual art
  • Must be aesthetically pleasing (it has to look good)
  • It must challenge you (aim high)

There is an example of how to do Task 2 on the wall.

Task 1
Discuss with your learning buddy about all of the different types of visual art (there are lots!).
Write 3 of them below.

Task 2- Your plan

Please insert a picture of what your completed art will look like. (It will be either: an image from the internet, a google drawing or a rough draft).

Write a list of materials you will need.
If a material is not in the classroom, include how you will get it.
black pen

Write a list of steps to take.
First draw the owl.
Then draw the branch.
Start painting the top of the owl with a watery paint and make your way down the owl.
Before you do the feet do the branch because the feet should stand out.
Then do the leaves and the outside of the leaves is a bit darker
Finally do the outside with a very watery brown  paint. Don’t forget the white swirls
